As we inch closer and closer to the anticipated unveiling of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones, we’ve seen an increasing number of leaks surface purporting to show them in the wild — and even fully functional units, live on video. While the day draws nearer, however, it’s only reasonable to assume that leaks will continue to pour in.
Why, just this morning, for instance, we came across yet another leak of what appears to be an official press shot of the edge-to-edge, curved AMOLED display-equipped handset — which was posted to Twitter by none other than famed serial leaker, Evan Blass, who’s also known in the cybersphere as EVLeaks.
The image aligns almost infallibly with what we’ve been seeing and hearing about the S8 for months now. It shows an ‘iPhone X’-like handset, boasting minimal bezels on the top and bottom — while the display, itself, curves around the edges of the device to create a truly bezel-free aesthetic — very similar to that of the Galaxy S7 Edge flagship from last year. We can also see two ‘quick launch’ shortcut icons, for phone and camera, respectively, in the bottom corners of the display, which is constituent with Samsung’s latest iteration of TouchWiz.
We can also see a total of three buttons protruding slightly from the edges of the handset, with that positioned on right side presumably being a power/sleep-wake button; the top button cluster on the left being the volume rocker; as well as a separate button located just below that, which is believed to be the dedicated button by which users will be able to activate ‘Bixby’ — Samsung’s forthcoming Siri competitor, which will host a litany of advanced search, object recognition, and visual-voice assistant functionalities.
What remains unclear is whether the device shown is the anticipated 5.7 to 5.8-inch Galaxy S8, or the larger, 6.2 to 6.3-inch Galaxy S8+ — since both devices will feature the same design and display format this year. Speaking of display: right smack dab in the center of the Quad HD+ AMOLED panel we can see the date ‘March 29th’, which has been confirmed by Sammy as the date that these flagships will officially be unveiled.
This should be an interesting year for Samsung, particularly as the company attempts to resuscitate and re-establish its image after the rough and fiery Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco of 2016. And for Apple, accordingly, because the Galaxy S8 and S8+ appear to be in the same boat as the upcoming ‘iPhone X’ flagship which will likely feature a very similar curved OLED display, no physical home button, and a bevy of advanced features that are expected to see their way onto the Galaxy S8 and S8+, as well.
Only time will tell what gravity of ‘turf wars’ will ensue between these 2017 flagships from South Korea and Cupertino, respectively — but, needless to say, it’s already looking like we’re in for some serious clashing.
