Apple Officially Releases macOS Sierra 10.12.1

Apple has officially released macOS Sierra version 10.12.1, which has a host of security enhancements, bug fixes, and other improvements. This version of macOS Sierra was tested over a month-long period, in which Apple seeded five beta versions of the update.

The macOS update features mostly under-the-hood changes, including plenty of fixes and improvements to issues that have come up since macOS Sierra was released to the public. That includes Photos support for the iPhone 7 Plus Portrait feature, which debuted in iOS 10.1. The Portrait mode allows users to take photos with a shallow depth-of-field effect — normally the territory of DSLR cameras. The update will add an automatic smart album in the Mac’s Photos app for images taken with this feature.

The update also includes a number of bug fixes, including fixing an issue that prevented Mail from updating when used with a Microsoft Exchange account, and an issue with Universal Clipboard that caused some text to paste incorrectly.

Additionally, macOS Sierra 10.12.1 has some general reliability enhancements. It’ll improve Microsoft Office compatibility when using iCloud, increase the reliability of the Auto Unlock Apple Watch feature, and improves the “security and stability” of the Safari app.

Apple was reportedly “on an accelerated timeline” to release the update before Thursday’s “Hello Again” event, MacRumors reported. That event is likely to unveil the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air refresh, and all of their new features. It’s equally as likely that macOS Sierra 10.12.1 will already come pre-installed on the new MacBook lineup, AppleInsider reported.

macOS Sierra 10.12.1, which Cupertino recommends all MacBook users download, is currently available as a free download via the Mac App Store.
