Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume, made headlines last summer when millions of its ultra-premium Galaxy Note 7 devices began bursting into flames due to a wide-ranging battery defect. Unfortunately, the fiery fiasco ultimately cost the company billions of dollars, while perhaps indefinitely tarnishing its reputation. And although Samsung should probably get some credit for addressing these battery issues ahead of its gorgeous new Note 8 phablet, a jaw-dropping video which surfaced this week shows that the Note 7 wasn’t the only Samsung device users should be concerned about.
A man who goes by the name Yulianto, and allegedly works at the Hotel Ciputra Semarang in Jakarta, Indonesia, was recently caught on CCTV at work, where he alleges that his 2013-era Samsung Grand Duos spontaneously burst into flames while tucked away in his front shirt pocket, according to a Channel News Asia report.
As you can see, the video appears to show Yulianto quietly minding his own business (almost staring into the camera) when he suddenly directs his attention towards his shirt pocket and — BANG — blue flashes, sparks of fire, and smoke begin emanating from his chest, as the panic-stricken man falls to the ground in a frantic frenzy to get his shirt off. Seconds later, a bystander can be seen stepping in to help.
“There was a strong sensation of heat and I felt something start to shake,” Yulianto said, while adding that “Before I knew what was happening there was fire and I panicked. I took off my shirt as quickly as I could.”
Yulianto, who suffered minor burns and was transported to a local hospital after the incident took place, says he’s never had problems like this with his phone before. And while he naturally theorized that the battery was to blame for the explosion, Indonesian police remain adamant that because the device wasn’t connected to a charger at the time of the explosion, it’s more probable that Yulianto’s simultaneous use of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS contributed to the extreme overheating, the report said.
Of course, while this may be the first time we’ve heard of a Samsung Grand Duos exploding, there have nevertheless been an abundance of reports citing how technical glitches resulted in charred smartphone remains.
