Alleged Foxconn iPhone 8 Dummy Backs up Design Rumors

An alleged dummy of Apple’s upcoming iPhone lines up with previous rumors of a vertically situated camera system, minimal bezels, and the lack of a home button. Pictures of the dummy device were first posted to Twitter by Benjamin Geskin, the source of several other rumors and schematics tied to the iPhone 8 (or iPhone Edition).

iPhone 8 Dummy

The entire front of the dummy appears to be taken up by a slightly curved glass screen with no discernible bezels. The back of the dummy device is where things get interesting: it appears to be equipped with a vertically oriented, dual-camera setup, as previous reports have suggested, but it lacks a rear-mounted Touch ID sensor. Curiously enough, there is also no Apple logo or any visible markings on the backplate of the device, either.

The dummy’s volume toggles, mute switch, power button and SIM trays seem to be placed similar to past iPhones. The sides of the device appear to be stainless steel, however an alleged source within Foxconn, suggested that the steel edges will be painted in a “Space Black” finish. Additionally, it was noted that the iPhone 8 will be around the same size and thickness as the iPhone 7, and certain hardware features, like the front-facing camera and earpiece, will be hidden at least partially beneath the device’s display.

Geskin previously provided insider information about the upcoming iPhone 8 to iDrop News last month, and his leaks have had a reliable track record. Of course, all of this information is still in the rumor-phase at this point — so it’s smart to take things with a grain of salt. It’s all further complicated by the fact that Apple is apparently working on at least 10 different prototypes of this year’s iPhone (including models with differing Touch ID sensor locations). So even if today’s particular dummy is indeed a genuine Foxconn model, it’s likely only one of those 10 prototypes, so there’s no guarantee that the final version of Apple’s latest flagship will resemble the dummy models, schematics or renders leaked thus far.
