‘SEGA Forever’ Brings Classic Console Games to iOS for Free

Riding on the wings of uber-successful releases like Pokémon GO and Super Mario Run, Japanese gaming-giant Nintendo is one of the hottest names in the video game space right now. And while this is in large part due to the company’s efforts to bring characters from signature titles from classic Nintendo consoles to modern day mobile gamers on iOS and Android, Nintendo isn’t the only Japanese-based game-maker wanting to cash in on the mobile gaming trend.

Enter the SEGA Forever: a brand-new (yet nostalgically familiar) front in the resurrection of classic console games for mobile devices. Brought to us by Sonic The Hedgehog creators, SEGA, the Forever Collection brings some of our most beloved classic SEGA titles (from consoles like the Master System to Dreamcast) to iOS and Android devices.

The first five titles of the Forever collection have already hit the iOS and Google Play app stores.

  1. Sonic The Hedgehog
  2. Phantasy Star II
  3. Kid Chameleon
  4. Altered Beast
  5. Comix Zone

What’s more, SEGA promises that the Forever collection will grow from here on out by one new title per month. New titles will be announced after the previous title launches, and according to SEGA’s official website, the 6th, upcoming title in the Forever Collection will be a classic Tennis game. (NOTE: you can also stay up-to-date on new titles by periodically checking back at SEGA’s website — or contact the company directly to request your personal favorites.)

All games are, and will continue to be, free to download and free to play, and each will be available as its own individual title, so you can easily choose which games you want to play and which you don’t. Since SEGA is obviously hoping to profit in some way by bringing these titles back to life, each game will come standard with minimal ads, which will appear in both the start menu and on save screens. Speaking of saving: players will be able to save their progress in each game with SEGA’s online servers, compete against other players around the globe, play using wireless, Bluetooth-connected controllers, and even play offline with no data connection.

And if you want to get rid of ads, altogether, while also enabling local saving on your iOS device (as opposed to on SEGA’s servers), you’ll be able to do so for just $1.99 per game.
