GarageBand, which started off in 2004 as a fun little app that allowed you to put together some simple tunes, has grown substantially. Today, the app puts a full-fledged music production studio right at your fingertips. And just this morning, Apple released an update to GarageBand for iOS devices, adding several more tools, some design tweaks, and a new instrument for iPhone and iPad users, making even the mobile version an impressive audio production tool.
GarageBand 2.2 for iOS became available as a free download for iOS users this morning. Users familiar with previous versions of the app will likely that the sound browser has been redesigned, making it easier to find and select virtual instruments. A new “multi-take recording feature” allows users to quickly record and compare multiple takes to decide which one is best before inserting it into their projects.
Apple also updated the Audio Recorder within the app, which, according to Apple, “adds fun, one-tap vocal effects and provides users with even more sophisticated studio effects like pitch correction, distortion, and delay.” Several new audio processing tools were made available to users in the update, as well, including an easy-to-use graphic equalizer, and the ability to use third-party Audio Unit plugins for some interesting new effects.
Lastly, the update adds a new instrument – the powerful “Alchemy” virtual synthesizer that Apple purchased from Camel Audio in 2015. The synthesizer was introduced into the Logic X Pro bundle, a premium audio software suite developed by Apple, last August, and is now available on the mobile version of GarageBand. According to Apple, the Alchemy synth bundled with GarageBand 2.2 “includes a rich collection of over 150 Apple-designed patches from a wide variety of genres, including EDM, Hip-Hop, Indie, Rock, Pop, and more.”
Alongside the GarageBand update, Apple also released version 10.3 of Logic Pro. And as an added little feature for Logic users, the new Logic Pro version and GarageBand 2.2 added a new share feature, allowing users to save a project file directly to iCloud, compatible with both Logic and GarageBand. Music makers who strike inspiration on the go can do a quick take in GarageBand, save it, and refine it later in Logic, or vice versa. Users of both GarageBand and Logic will be very happy with the new tools introduced in the pair of updates.
