iDrop News received exclusive insider information about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 handset back in March, most notably concerning the device’s aesthetic redesigning of certain external components, while emphasizing how the 10th anniversary flagship could potentially be referred to as the iPhone Edition. The information, which was provided to us courtesy of iPhone concept artist Benjamin Geskin, surrounded a number of leaked images and schematics depicting an iPhone with a dramatically redesigned, nearly edge-to-edge display featuring very narrow bezels around the edges of the chassis, as well as a Touch ID fingerprint sensor which, due to manufacturing constraints, had been repositioned to the rear of the device at Apple’s behest. The iPhone Edition also featured a vertically reoriented dual-lens camera module on the back side — flipped to a top-to-bottom orientation so as to maximize the photographic capabilities of the iPhone when it’s used in landscape mode.
And now, Geskin has posted yet another round of iPhone images to his official Twitter account, which appear to corroborate many of the features and design elements we’ve predicted — while raising some additional questions about the future of Touch ID. Shown below, the images embody a slightly thicker chassis reinforced with the long-rumored steel frame. which resembles a structurally different iPhone than Apple’s iPhone 6, 6s and 7 handsets before it.
First and foremost, we can see the nearly edge-to-edge display, which takes up essentially all of the device’s front-facing panel — with the exception of very narrow bezels on the bottom and sides, as well as a small projection at the top, which appears to house the earpiece receiver and a total of two, front-facing selfie cameras. According to previous reports, the iPhone Edition will employ two cameras on the front of the device, which will help facilitate Apple’s advanced new 3D imaging and facial recognition technology.
Apple’s plans for Touch ID on the iPhone Edition remain unclear at this time. While some reports suggest that the company has decided to implement a rear-mounted Touch ID sensor due to lower-than-expected manufacturing yields, other reports claim that Apple is already testing a prototype of the iPhone Edition featuring an under-the-glass, OLED display-embedded Touch ID module, which has been rumored for the flagship iPhone as far back as August of last year.
Meanwhile, another render posted by Geskin earlier this week appears to confirm rumors that the iPhone Edition will boast a massive, 5.8-inch OLED display panel, featuring a designated function area at the bottom, which could potentially house the Touch ID sensor and a slate of touch-responsive controls to help users navigate the device.
