With Apple’s highly-anticipated product launch event right around the corner, speculation has been mounting about how quickly thereafter we might be able to pre-oder or get our hands on the company’s most advanced iPhone models yet. Of course, until Tuesday morning, we really have no indication of a firm launch date or timeline..
However, by merely following the discourse of history, while factoring in key clues that have surfaced along the way, it’s plausible we could be looking at the iPhone 8 unveiling on September 12, followed by a pre-order period beginning at 12:00 am on Friday, September 15, and lastly an official launch of all three iPhone models on the following Friday, September 22.
How Can We Be Sure?
Here’s the short answer: we can’t be — at least not affirmatively, of course. We can, however, take a look back on history and make plausible predictions based on the record, which holds that Apple has an almost rock-solid, five-year history of releasing its new iPhone models according to the following formula: an event in the first week or so of September > pre-orders just a few days thereafter > and an official launch date between 7-10 days after that. Observe Apple’s schedule for iPhone launches in the last 5-years below:
- iPhone 5 (2012) — Sept. 12 event, Sept.14 pre-orders, Sept. 21 launch.
- iPhone 5s (2013) — Sept. 10 event, no pre-orders, Sept. 10 launch.
- iPhone 6/6 Plus (2014) — Sept. 9 event, Sept. 12 pre-orders, Sept. 19 launch.
- iPhone 6s/6s Plus (2015) — Sept. 9 event, Sept. 12 pre-orders, Sept. 25 launch.
- iPhone 7/7 Plus (2016) — Sept. 7 event, Sept. 9 pre-orders, Sept. 16 launch.
If Apple plans to follow the same, relative time schedule as shown above, then we can logically estimate that the iPhone 8, as well as the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, will be available for pre-order the Friday following Tuesday’s announcement, with the models going live in-store the following week.
Lending further credence to this schedule is a report from the German Mac blog, Macerkopf, which alleges that that “German carriers are preparing for a September 15 pre-order date and a September 22 launch date.”
There are, of course, slight deviations to Apple’s event-launch schedule in recent years that we should note. First of all, back in 2013, Apple didn’t even offer pre-orders on its iPhone 5s devices. Secondly, we’ve heard so many reports of iPhone 8 manufacturing and launch delays, it’s hard to believe that availability at lunch won’t be extremely limited, at best.
In either case, be sure to check back with us on Tuesday the 12th after 10:00 am PST for updates on everything iPhone 8 and more.
