Apple has made iOS 11.1.2 available to the public on Thursday afternoon. It’s the second minor update put out by the company in the last two weeks, and it fixes one big issue.
Yes, as you might have guessed by the timing, iOS 11.1.2 fixes the iPhone X cold weather bug. First discovered last week, the issue would cause iPhone X’s displays to temporarily lose touch responsiveness when moving from a warm environment to a much colder environment — such as moving the device from an indoor temperature to the chilly weather outside.
The bug caused the iPhone X to selectively miss certain inputs, meaning that typing was a lot more difficult than it should have been.
While Apple does have temperature operating guidelines for its flagship device, many users reported that their iPhone X handsets were affected in temperatures around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s well within those guidelines.
The timing of today’s update is commendable, as it’s a fast turnaround for Apple. Reports of the iPhone X losing responsiveness or freezing up in chillier temperatures first surfaced online last week. Last Friday, Apple acknowledged the issue in a statement and added that they were working on a fix.
iOS 11.1.2 is a relatively small update, clocking in at about 51.4 megabytes for iPhone X users. In addition to the fix for the cold weather bug, iOS 11.1.2 also addresses an issue that would cause distortion in Live Photos and videos recorded by iPhone X devices, Apple wrote in its release notes. Other than that, Apple has not made it clear if the update contains security patches.
Last Thursday, Apple released iOS 11.1.1, which contained a fix for another significant bug: the widespread issue that caused the letter “i” to autocorrect to a random letter and unreadable Unicode character.
