Apple Brings Back the Peach Butt Emoji in iOS 10.2 Beta 3 Following User Complaints

After a brief stint as a more photorealistic fruit, the infamous peach emoji will return to look more like a butt following user complaints.

Apple is currently making an effort to rework many emoji in iOS 10.2, aiming to make many of them more detailed and realistic. But in the first beta version of iOS 10.2, Cupertino ruffled quite a few feathers when it changed the peach emoji to look much rounder and more realistic — and less like a butt. The internet noticed and reacted swiftly, with no shortage of mourning — probably due to the fact that the peach emoji has long been an analog for a posterior.

But, don’t fret, internet. The fine folk at Cupertino have heard your cries, and the peach emoji in iOS 10.2 beta 3 has been amended, according to MacRumors. And it arguably looks even more like a derriere. Sure, it’s a small change to an operating system update. But it does suggest that Apple listens to user feedback, even when it concerns an arguably insignificant facet of their software. That fact alone should be celebrated.

While it may be easy to poke fun at the internet’s outrage over the peach emoji, it’s actually poses an interesting question about the emoji’s role in modern human communication. TechCrunch contributor Devin Coldewey mused in an ode to the peach butt emoji that the emoticons have been accepted as a new “shared visual vocabulary,” and that emojis now have their own “connotations, nuances and innuendos.”

Upcoming iOS 10.2 will add a slew of new emojis to Apple’s operating system. They include a facepalm emoji, an avocado, a selfie, and a wide range of new profession emojis in both male and female genders. iOS 10.2 is currently only available for beta testers and developers, although we should expect the final version of the update to be released to the public in the coming weeks.
