iPhone 8’s 5.8-Inch Display Will Be Divided: 5.15-Inch Main Display with ‘Function Area’ Below

Rumors have circulated for months speculating that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 would feature an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch display; complicating the mix were other rumors stating that the device’s display would only be 5.2-inches. And now, it’s all but determined that Apple’s iPhone 8 will feature a massive 5.8-inch display however only 5.15 inches of that display will be usable in the traditional sense. According to famed KGI Securities analyst, the iPhone 8’s remaining display-area will be reserved for virtual buttons and Touch ID, what Kuo calls the “Function area.”

If all of the compiled credible rumors are true, the iPhone 8’s display will cover the entire front face of the device, eliminating the large bezels that surrounded the displays of all previous iterations of the iPhone. Without bezels, there would simply be no room for Apple’s renowned Touch ID Home button. Not coincidentally, Apple was recently granted a patent that would solve this problem altogether by deploying a method of fingerprint detection that uses infrared emitters and sensors that sit alongside RGB light emitting diodes (LEDs) within the display, eliminating the need for a separate physical Touch ID Home button.

Kuo goes on to report that Apple’s OLED-equipped iPhone 8 will be similar in physical size to the 4.7” iPhone 7, albeit with a much larger display.

The iPhone 8’s battery life might also be greatly improved over previous generations due to OLED technology’s natural ability to consume less power than traditional LCD displays. Also, it has been rumored that Apple will develop and introduce a more compact stacked logic board, which will allow room for a larger battery.
