New iPhone X Ads Star Animoji Singing Catchy Migos, Childish Gambino Songs

Apple is stepping up its Animoji game with the release of two star-studded ad spots featuring Migos and Childish Gambino.

The Animoji commercials, which Apple shared to its YouTube page on Friday, use the “Animoji karaoke” format that gained popularity after the release of the iPhone X. The two ads are meant to promote the iPhone X and both were created specifically for the Grammys.

The first ad features the alien Animoji singing “Redbone” by Childish Gambino, who is slated to perform at the Grammys this year.

The ad takes an amusing and psychedelic turn when a choir of Unicorn Animoji joins the alien for the song’s chorus.

The second ad, titled “Amigos,” features the Animoji dog, fox and poop characters singing the popular “Stir Fry” by Atlanta area-based Migos, who are nominated for Best Rap Album at this year’s Grammys. Like the first ad, the “Amigos” spot features cameo appearances from various emoji characters during certain moments of the song.

Animoji, of course, are 3D emoji characters that debuted with the release of the iPhone X. Using the advanced TrueDepth Camera on the flagship, Animoji are meant to accurately mimic a user’s facial expressions and emotion.

It’s also not the first time that Apple has used the trend for one of its marketing campaigns. In November, Apple released another ad spot featuring various Animoji — and their respective human counterparts — singing “All Night” by Big Boi.

The two Animoji commercials are available to watch on YouTube. But they’ll also show during the Grammys on Jan. 28. The “Alien” ad spot will follow Childish Gambino’s performance, and the “Amigos” ad will air after the Best Rap Album category.
