Samsung Confirms Galaxy S9 Scheduled for February Unveiling

Samsung this week confirmed that its Galaxy S9 flagship will be unveiled on February 25, 2018.

In a Tweet published to the official Samsung Mobile Twitter account, the South Korean company not only confirmed the date and timing of its spring, 2018 ‘Unpacked’ event, but it went on to tease some of the device’s new features.

‘Unpacked’ is Samsung’s annual, Apple-inspired event at which it showcases its latest Galaxy devices. Samsung’s own president of mobile operations, DJ Koh, hinted just a few weeks ago the Galaxy S9 will be unveiled just a day ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 — the mobile industry’s most highly anticipated, annual smartphone symposium, being held this year in Barcelona, Spain, between February 26 and March 1.

That pegs the S9’s unveiling at just a day ahead of the main MWC event, at which we’re expected to see a variety of new devices (including some 2018 flagships) showcased by some of the world’s leading smartphone vendors.

Samsung has traditionally held its ‘Unpacked’ event separate from MWC. Although the company still announces new devices at MWC, its Galaxy S smartphones are arguably the crown jewel of its lineup so they typically have their own event.

As it typically does, Samsung has teased us with little clues about what to expect of the next Galaxy. Hints like “The Camera. Reimagined” are a pretty clear indication that the S9 will be a great camera phone.

As we saw in a previous Galaxy S9 leak, the alleged camera could potentially be a “Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP” sensor featuring optical image stabilization and two, F1.5 and F2.4 apertures — though it’s not entirely clear if that means it’ll be a dual-lens camera like the module on Galaxy Note 8.

Other notable camera features include an 8 MP front-facing selfie camera — though it’s not expected to boast TrueDepth caliber camera capabilities.

Additional Galaxy S9 features should includes storage starting at 64 GB and ranging up to 512 GB, 4 GB of RAM, wireless and fast charging, AKG-tunes stereo speakers, and either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos 9810 under the hood.
