People Are Disguising AirPods as Cheap Boxes of Dental Floss to Foil Thieves

Owners of Apple’s wireless AirPods, which retail for approximately $160, have adopted a novel tactic to prevent theft of their pricey earbuds– disguising them as a cheap box of mint waxed dental floss that isn’t worth swiping.

AirPods notably come in a sleek white charging case that’s shaped like a nondescript container of to-go dental floss. To hide their precious AirPods from thieving hands, some owners have been slapping stickers, which feature the brand of a made-up dental hygiene company, on their cases. The stickers generally retail for between $5 and $10 dollars, which is well worth it considering the $69 cost of replacing a lost AirPod.

The innovative and low-tech theft deterrents can be found on Etsy, though some users have been opting to save extra money by repurposing stickers from actual boxes of dental floss.

It’s a practical, hilarious and crafty idea that should confuse all but the most discerning and hawk-eyed of pickpockets, though it does little to prevent AirPods owners from losing their earbuds through carelessness. And, if you do opt to disguise your $160 Apple product as a $2 box of disposable dental floss, make sure you don’t confuse yourself and trash them during a routine purse or bag clear-out.
