Synaptics Debuts Impressive Multi-Factor Facial and Fingerprint Recognition System for Mobile Devices

Synaptics has announced a new, all-in-one facial and fingerprint recognition system for use in mobile devices ahead of CES 2017.

The new engine relies on multi-factor biometric recognition, and was developed in partnership with facial recognition startup KeyLemon. The system — which can recognize both faces and fingerprints — would allow users to unlock a device in several different ways, depending on which is most convenient at the time.

That means if a user is wearing gloves, they can use facial recognition to save time in unlocking their devices. Similarly, a user with sunglasses on a bright day might opt for fingerprint authentication in lieu of taking their glasses off.

In addition to unlocking a mobile device, the multi-factor system can also be used to beef up security for accessing sensitive information or making purchases — since the system can require both authentication factors to be used. The system also has some clever security additions, including an anti-spoofing AI that can tell the difference between real and fake fingerprints, and a facial recognition system that checks faces for eye blinks and head movement, according to BGR.

The San Jose-based company said that its collaboration with KeyLemon will allow it to bring biometric innovation to the market much quicker, due to the fact that the facial recognition startup is already well-established in its industry, DigitalTrends reported. Anthony Gioeli, the company’s vice president of marketing, also said that this partnership is just the first step of a larger effort to improve Synaptics’ biometric security systems.

It’s worth noting that Synaptics is an Apple supplier, but that doesn’t guarantee that the new multi-factor system will appear in this year’s upcoming and highly anticipated iPhone 8. In fact, Cupertino is rumored to be working on its own proprietary multi-factor authentication system. Additionally, Synaptics hasn’t announced which other flagships will use the tech this year.
