Apple rolled out iOS 10.3, the latest version of the operating system for the iPhone and iPad, late last month. iOS 10.3 came after seven rounds of beta releases and brought with it a host of security improvements and a bunch of new features, which is why we’ve compiled this list of new iOS 10.3 tips and tricks you need to know.
5. Get a Weather Report in Maps
For those of you with an iPhone 6s model or newer, you can use 3D Touch functionality to trigger a weather forecast pop-up for a specific area from within the Maps app without exiting and opening the Weather app separately. Just follow these steps:
- Open Maps.
- Locate the cloud or sun-shaped weather icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Note: If you don’t see the weather icon, try zooming into the map further.
- Hard press the icon to pull up a local forecast for the area for that day, with weather information listed by the hour.
- If you continue holding on the icon, the Weather app will open in a separate window.
4. Edit Your Apple ID Profile Page in Settings
Another nifty feature in iOS 10.3 can be found in the Settings app, which now comes with an Apple ID profile page. It makes it easier to edit your Apple ID account information, from your email address to your password and shipping details. As a side note, keep in mind that iCloud and iTunes & App Store have been moved from the main menu of the Settings page into the Apple ID page.
- Open Settings.
- Locate the Apple ID Profile section at the top of the page and tap on it.
- Edit your Apple ID profile name, phone number, email, password, payment method, and shipping address.
3. Find and Manage 32-bit Apps
Apple has warned users that support for 32-bit applications will be cut off in a future version of iOS to speed things up. You may have even seen the following warning about 32-bit apps on your iPhone: “These apps may slow down your iPhone and will not work with future versions of iOS if they are not updated.” Many app developers have responded to the memo accordingly and updated their applications to 64-bit versions. That being said, it’s probably wise to start getting rid of your 32-bit applications and upgrading them on your end– both to save space and to stop them from slowing down your phone.
iOS 10.3 has stepped in to make things a whole lot easier for you, by introducing a new App Compatibility section that helps users track down and get rid of 32-bit apps. Here’s how to do it.
- Open Settings.
- Tap on General.
- Tap on About.
- Tap on Applications. Note: If this action doesn’t take you anywhere, don’t worry, it means that all of your apps have been updated to 64 bit).
- Any 32-bit apps you have will be listed in an App Compatibility menu.
- Within this menu, you can start deleting outdated 32-bit apps and updating legacy apps where updates are available
- If there is no update available, tap on the outdated app and you’ll be taken to its App Store page.
- From there, find and tap on Developer Website, and look for contact information so you can reach out to the app developers and urge them to update it.
2. Find Your Lost AirPods
For good measure, and in case you don’t know how, here’s how to use the Find My AirPods feature in 10.3.
- Open the Find My iPhone app within your iPhone or iPad.
- Select AirPods from the device list.
- Check the last known location from which your AirPods connected to your iOS device.
- If your misplaced earbuds are within Bluetooth range of you and your device, you can tap on Play Sound from within the Find My iPhone app, which will cause your AirPods to play music to help you track them down.
1. Make and Receive Wi-Fi Calls Over iCloud
Good news for Verizon users with iPhones. iOS 10.3 now allows Verizon users to make and receive calls through a range of supported iCloud-connected devices, including the iPod , MacBook, iMac, iPad, and Apple Watch. If these devices are signed into your iCloud account, you can make and receive calls from them using your carrier account, even when your iPhone isn’t nearby.
To enable this feature:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Phone.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling.
- Enable Wi-Fi Calling.
- Go back to Settings.
- Tap Phone.
- Tap Calls on Other Devices.
- Toggle on Calls on Other Devices.
- Then, make sure that your other iCloud-connected devices have Wi-Fi Calling enabled.
