Apple is debuting a new Earth Day-inspired Activity Challenge meant to get users active and outside. The new activity will challenge Apple Watch owners to complete a 30-minute outdoor exercise on Earth Day — which is this Saturday, April 22. Users who successfully complete the Activity Challenge will be awarded a special Earth Day badge, as well as exclusive stickers that can be used in iMessage. The Activity Challenge will first become available to Apple Watch owners this Thursday, April 20.
“Get outside and celebrate Earth Day on April 22 and earn this award,” Apple wrote for the challenge. “Go for a walk, run, cycle, wheelchair, or swim workout of 30 minutes or more in the Workout app or in any third party app that writes these workouts to Health.”
This isn’t the first public Activity Challenge that Apple has given to Apple Watch owners — in fact, it’s the third. Cupertino also hosted a “Ring in the New Year” challenge that rewarded users who managed to close three Activity rings each day for a full week in January. Before that, Apple debuted a similar challenge last Thanksgiving, offering users exclusive stickers and achievements for completing a 5K walk or run during the holiday.
Apple, well known as a forerunner in sustainability and eco-conscious business practices, frequently uses Earth Day to highlight its commitment to environmental practices. In honor of Earth Day, employees at Apple’s retail stores will don green shirts starting April 20, and the company will add a green leaf accent to its normally white logo to commemorate the occasion.
Additionally, Apple is hosting an environment-themed keynote at its flagship Union Square store this evening with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.
