Apple Says It’s Working on a Fix for the iPhone X Cold Weather Bug

Over the last week, a portion of iPhone X users reported that their devices became unresponsive in cold weather. Today, we’re finally getting an official response from Apple.

A number of iPhone X owners took to Reddit and Twitter in the last few days to report the issue. While there’s no clear indication of how widespread the display unresponsiveness is, social media reports seem to indicate that it’s not an isolated incident. On Friday, however, we learned that Apple is apparently aware of the problem and working on a fix that’ll be issued in a future version of iOS.

“We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment,” Apple wrote in a statement to The Loop. “After several seconds the screen will become fully responsible again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”

Interestingly, Apple does have guidelines on the best operating temperature for its devices. According to a support document, Apple recommends that users “use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Any use outside of this normal range, Apple adds, could result in a change in behavior.

On the other hand, some of the users who have complained about iPhone X problems in cold weather reported that they were using their devices well within this operating range. According to one user, they experienced problems with iPhone X display responsiveness when using the handset in temperatures around 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the very least, we know that Apple is probably on top of the problem. While it’s not clear when Apple will issue a fix for the bug, due to the pressing nature of the issue, it might very well be included in a future beta version of iOS 11.2

In the meantime, many users who are experiencing the issue said that locking and unlocking their devices returns touch responsiveness back to normal.
