Samsung is finally rolling out Android Nougat 7.0 to unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge phones. The previous Nougat beta testing program, which opened in December, was restricted to the fortunate few who were able to enroll in it.
While Samsung’s beta team had previously suggested that the final Nougat version release would occur on January 17, it appears they’ve ramped up their timetable. Now, the Nougat upgrade will be available to regular Samsung users ahead of schedule. Those who already have the beta should see a 215 MB update coming down the pipeline.
The update was first reported by SamMobile, and will initially reach unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices in Europe. Samsung doesn’t currently sell unlocked models in the US, meaning Samsung users stateside need to await their carriers to get around to making it available, according to ArsTechnica. In any case, as Android 7.0 expands to Samsung units in various markets, it should see its adoption rate grow markedly. As of now, Nougat accounts runs on a paltry 0.7% of Android devices.
Nougat first debuted five months ago in August 2016, bringing with it a host of new features such as split-screen mode, new emojis, greater battery efficiency, and a refreshed notification panel.
