Apple is still on track to release its most advanced iPhone ever, rumored to be named the ‘iPhone X’ to commemorate the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, boasting a curved edge-to-edge OLED display. But contrary to previous credible rumors, a new report suggests the curved OLED display will instead lay semi-flat on the device.
The report comes to us courtesy of TrendForce, who suggested that while the 5.15-inch display destined for Apple’s top-tier flagship will feature an impressive 2K display, the curved-glass that was previously rumored for the device has been suffering under the stress of both production issues and drop tests — and, as such, the company has outright dropped plans to release the iPhone X featuring said display.
The TrendForce report, if indeed it is accurate, would certainly raise a number of questions: first and foremost among them would be centered around the previously inked, $4.3 billion deal that Apple had reached with Samsung Display, which would have provided Cupertino with as many as 160 million OLED panels for the iPhone X. To that end, it has for long been rumored that Apple will be releasing said device featuring a 5.8-inch curved OLED panel, although only 5.15- to 5.2-inches of the display would have been flat and responsive to touch, with the other screen real estate curving slightly around the edges of the device.
Aside from the last-minute display shake-up, TrendForce’s report suggests that Apple’s iPhone X will still be the first to ship without a dedicated Home button, which will instead be replaced by virtual buttons. The iPhone X, thanks in part to these design changes, will still remain small and compact enough to fit within a footprint just about the same size of Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone. Echoing previous reports, TrendForce also suggested that Apple’s iPhone X will feature an all-new form of advanced 3D facial recognition, which could potentially act as another form of security along with Touch ID.
While the iPhone X — even without a curved display — could still cost as much as $1,000 or more, TrendForce reiterated that Apple is still on track to release incremental updates to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as well. These will be 4.7- and 5.5-inch handsets, respectively, which will incorporate next-generation internals, beefed up camera modules, wireless charging capabilities, perhaps, and will more than likely be dubbed the ‘iPhone 7s’ and ‘iPhone 7s Plus’.
The latter of those devices, as well as the iPhone X, will supposedly be equipped with 3 GB of RAM, while the standard 4.7-inch device will likely retain the same 2 GB of RAM as the iPhone 7.
