Samsung’s newest chipset is more powerful, uses less energy, and is the company’s first to feature gigabit LTE.
The Exynos 9 Series 8895, which the company recently announced ahead of the Mobile World Congress, is the first to be manufactured with the company’s 10-nanometer processing technology. As a result, Samsung is boasting that the chip will receive a 27 percent bump in performance while using 40 percent less battery when compared to chips made with the previous 14-nanometer manufacturing process, according to a press release.
Notably, Samsung’s latest CPU is the firm’s first to be equipped with a gigabit LTE modem with support for five carrier aggregation. Theoretically, this means that the chipset will allows for top downlink speeds of 1 gigabit-per-second, and maximum upload speeds of around 150 megabits-per-second, according to the company.
Additionally, the 8895 chipset is an octa-core processor, featuring a mix of Cortex A53 CPUs and Samsung’s own custom cores. The company claims that its latest chipset will be able to playback 4K video at an impressive 120 frames-per-second. In addition, the 8895 will be able to support VR content at a similar resolution. A separate processing unit will also help keep private data — such as biometric recognition and payment information — protected with an enhanced security solution.
The chipset is reportedly already in “mass production,” and due to the timing of Samsung’s announcement, it’s a good wager that the Exynos 8895 will show up in the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus flagships later this year.
