Top 7 Notes Tricks for iOS 10

Apple’s proprietary Notes app for iOS was at one point in time, rather bland and useless, allowing users only to carry out quick notes and unorganized lists.

With the advent of more recent versions, Apple has brought a bevy of advanced features and capabilities to its Notes app, rendering it a truly viable platform for taking down lengthy notes and customizing them with links, handwritten text, and images, with the ability to organize them in various styles, with different fonts, or even securing them with a password so they’ll always be under wraps from unauthorized eyes.

And while iOS Notes is certainly not destined to become a replacement to your traditional word processor, we’re nevertheless going to share a few tips with you on how to make the most of the Notes app in iOS 10.

7. Create Folders and Easily Move Your Notes Between Them

Notes now allows you to create and organize different folders.

  1. Open Notes and tap the yellow < back arrow, found on the upper left-hand corner of the screen, to reveal the Folders page.
  2. Depending on your iCloud setup, here you’ll see a list of options including iCloud, On My iPhone, and Notes associated with your various email accounts.
  3. To create a new folder, simply tap New Folder in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, then select where you’d like the new folder to be stored from the pop-up menu.
  4. You’ll then be able to name the folder whatever you’d like and tap Save.

To move your notes from one folder to another.

  1. Go back to the Folders page and select the appropriate folder from the list.
  2. Tap Edit in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Then select the Notes you’d like to move.
  4. Finally, select Move To, and then choose your destination folder from the options provided.

6. Password Protect Your Notes

Say you’ve typed out a private note, maybe a list of gifts you’d like to purchase for a loved one, and you’d like to save it under the protection of a password – here’s how it’s done.

  1. Simply tap the Share button (small box with an arrow pointing upwards out of it).
  2. Then tap the Lock icon on the bottom menu bar.
  3. Set up a personal password and then tap Done.
  4. Tap the Lock button on the top right corner of your screen to lock your note when you’re finished with it.
  5. It can easily be unlocked by tapping on the lock icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, or by tapping View Note.
  6. If your device is Touch ID-enabled, simply scan your finger, and viola — the note is now unlocked.

5. Add Photos to Notes

  1. From the lower toolbar in any Note, simply tap the center Camera icon, which will allow you to either capture a new photo or video, or add an existing one from your camera roll.
  2. Select the photo or video and then select Choose from the bottom right-hand corner.
  3. Once photos or videos appear (which could take a few seconds) they’ll show up as in-line attachments exactly where the onscreen cursor was positioned.

4. Create a Checkable List

This is a great feature for creating grocery or to-do lists, and allows you to create bullet lists of items that can be “checked off,” one by one, as you complete them in real-time.

  1. In the lower right-hand corner of a new Note, simply select the (+) icon to reveal the toolbar of yellow options.
  2. From there, select the circular icon with a (√) check, which will automatically generate a checkable bubble icon onscreen.
  3. Once it appears, you can simply enter text, and to create a second item on the list, simply press enter and a new bubble will appear.

3. Add Handwritten Text to Notes

This feature allows you to add your own personal touch to notes by adding handwritten text or hand-drawn designs.

  1. In any note, simply select the fourth, yellow squiggly icon from the bottom toolbar, and then select the option that suits your note best.
  2. You’ll be able to write using various writing tools, such as a pencil, pen, or thick marker.
  3. You can also choose a different color font by tapping on the last, black (o) icon in the bottom toolbar.
  4. Written text can also be erased or undone, stroke by stroke, using either the eraser tool, or simply tapping the back or forward Undo arrows in the upper left-hand corner.

2. Create Unique Headings, and Bold, Italicize, or Underline Text

iOS 10 Notes comes with a bunch of unique formatting options baked right in.

  1. Start a new Note and tap the (+) icon, and then select the first yellow (Aa) icon from the options.
  2. This will bring up a sub-menu including options like Title, Heading, Body, and Bulleted List. Depending on the style you’re going for with your Note, select an option, and then the selected text will automatically be formatted accordingly.
  3. To bold, italicize, or underline text, simply double-tap any word onscreen, and then select text to highlight by tapping and sliding the dotted ends of the highlight box to cover what you’d like to change.
  4. Select BIU from the menu options, and then then choose Bold, Italic, or Underline — the highlighted text onscreen will change accordingly.

1. Collaborate in Real-time

While this feature only works between users running iOS 10 or later, it’s nevertheless a useful tool for those who’d like to create and edit notes in real-time. Ideal for collaborating on notes with your contacts, collaboration allows you to work on notes, edit them, save them, and see the changes across your entire line of iOS devices in real-time.

  1. To add contacts to your note-in-progress, simply tap the collaboration icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Select iMessage or email contacts, and so long as they’re also running iOS 10, they’ll receive a link from which they’ll be able to join the note directly from their own iOS device.
