Why the Galaxy S8’s Incredible Display Is Good News for Apple

The Galaxy S8’s display lives up to the hype — and that’s good news for both Samsung and Apple.

The people at DisplayMate analyzed the display on Samsung’s newest flagship, and have come to the conclusion that the Galaxy S8’s display is the best that’s currently available. And that’s a lot coming from the site, whose experts analyze and rate basically every smartphone display that’s released. “The Galaxy S8 is the most innovative and high-performance smartphone display design that we have ever lab tested,” DisplayMate president Raymond M. Soneira wrote in a blog post. “So the Galaxy S8 becomes the Best Performing Smartphone Display, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.”

That score broken down looks like this: the Galaxy S8’s display currently has the highest native color gamut, the highest contract in ambient light, the highest resolution, the highest contrast ratio, the lowest reflectance, and the smallest brightness variation with viewing angle.

While this is much-needed good news for Samsung — who needed to recover and restore confidence in light of recent events — it also bodes well for Apple. As previously reported, Samsung has been tapped by Cupertino to produce as many as 160 million OLED display panels through 2018 — conceivably for Apple’s top-of-the-line and radically redesigned 10th anniversary iPhone. That’s almost purely because Samsung is the only display manufacturer that can meet Apple’s demand and quality expectations.

If the Galaxy S8’s display is any indicator of Samsung’s quality of manufacturing, it means that this year’s flagship iPhone display will likely carry the same quality and features. The similarities won’t just end there — Apple’s 2017 flagship is also expected to have an edge-to-edge display design with minimal bezels, and other advanced features that echo some elements of the S8. It’s no secret that Samsung and Apple flagships tend to mirror each other — what is currently unknown is how Apple will ensure that its own smartphones stand out amongst the competition.
