YouTube TV is officially launching today in select markets throughout the U.S.
The online streaming bundle service is currently rolling out in New York, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago and Philadelphia — with the streaming package slated to launch in more markets soon, according to CNBC. The $35 subscription packages content from 40 providers such as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, Fox Sports, Comcast SportsNet and — as YouTube announced today — AMC Networks. The service is currently available in those markets on mobile devices. Users who want to stream on their TVs will have to use a Google Chromecast to do so.
In addition to becoming available in other U.S. cities, YouTube said that other content providers — such as AMC, BBC America, IFC and Sundance TV — will soon be included for no additional charge. Additionally, the $35-a-month membership price also includes access to YouTube Red content, as well as support for up to six accounts on a single subscription and up to three streams running simultaneously. YouTube TV also has a built-in DVR service that allows subscribers to record their streaming channels and shows to watch later.
The streaming bundle was first announced by YouTube in late February. It’s the latest attempt for a multimedia company to try and poach cord cutters into subscribing for an internet-based service — and other tech companies are following suit. Apple, for example, has long been rumored to be preparing its own proprietary content streaming service, though Cupertino has been struggling to get its service off the ground.
YouTube is currently offering a 30-day free trial of its TV service to new subscribers. After that trial is up, customers who decide to keep the subscription will receive a free Google Chromecast, while supplies last of course. For more information, visit YouTube TV’s webpage.
