Up until now, scanning QR codes in iOS required you to use a third-party app such as Google Chrome, but iOS 11 brings an end to this by introducing a built-in QR code scanner.
This new feature is baked into the Camera app allowing you to scan QR codes directly from the Lock screen. Like many other features, QR code scanner is a function that Apple didn’t demonstrate during the iOS 11 announcement at WWDC 2017. There just wasn’t enough time to showcase all of the new features that came with iOS 11.
Nonetheless, it’s good to see that iOS 11 is finally bringing one of the most requested features to iOS, such as native screen recorder, QR code scanning, customizable Control Center, and more. Using the new QR code scanner is very easy and simple. In fact, you’ll be surprised to know how it works.
How to Scan QR Codes in iOS 11 Using the Camera App
Step 1: Open the Camera app.
Step 2: Point your camera at a QR code, which will either be printed or presented in digital format. Tap on the screen to focus if required.
Step 3: And that’s it! The Camera app will recognize the QR code and scan it automatically. Once the information is processed, a notification banner appears at the top with details of the output. You can tap on the banner to view the output, which could either be a website URL, directions to a location, hotlink to an app, piece of text, etc.
As you can see, it’s very easy to use the QR code scanner in iOS 11. You no longer have to depend on third-party apps now that the Camera app has this feature built-in. One of the interesting features of the scanner is that it can also scan a router’s QR code to quickly join its wireless network.
Apple has already released the first beta of iOS 11 to registered developers. The beta version allows developers to update their apps for iOS 11 and lets Apple track and collect information on bugs. While it’s not recommended that normal users install iOS 11 beta, there is a way to get it without a developer account.
