Apple’s Next iPad Pro Will Feature a 10.5″ Display, According to Intriguing Mathematical Theory

Rumor has it that Apple is working on an iPad Pro with an edge-to-edge display — but there have been mixed messages about the upcoming tablet’s true size.

One of the more credible rumors, suggesting a new iPad Pro size, comes from Studio Neat designer Dan Provost. Last week, Provost wrote a post on Medium that made the case for Apple releasing a 10.5-inch iPad Pro — a size that many, including noted Apple writer John Gruber said “doesn’t make any sense.” Provost brings up the fact that, when the 12.9-inch iPad Pro was unveiled in September 2015, Apple VP Phil Schiller went into detail, describing why Apple decided on that particular size. Essentially, a 12.9-inch iPad Pro has — when in landscape mode — about the same screen space as two iPad 9.7-inch iPads side-by-side.

A 10.5-inch iPad Pro would be doing essentially the same thing, but with a screen the size of two iPad mini tablets. Provost backed up his argument with a little math — specifically, the Pythagorean Theorem. “The math works out perfectly. This new 10.5-inch iPad would have the exact same resolution as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but the same pixel density of the iPad mini,” Provost wrote.

Other rumors have pegged the upcoming iPad Pro model at around 10 inches, although rumors have claimed a screen size of anywhere from 10.1 to 10.9 inches. Famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, of KGI Securities, originally forecasted a 10.5-inch screen size, but later amended his statement to say that it could be anywhere from 10 to 10.5 inches, MacRumors reported.

On the other hand, Mac Otakara has released two reports about this upcoming iPad Pro. One, citing “reliable sources,” suggested a 10.1-inch iPad. The other, which pulled rumors from the Taiwanese supply chain, claimed that Apple would release an iPad Pro with a 10.9-inch display.

But despite that, adding up the evidence — and Provost’s sound argument — it seems that a 10.5-inch iPad Pro would make the most sense, and the size would certainly fit well with Apple’s other Pro-level tablets. In any case, the rumored iPad Pro is expected to be a flagship tablet with an edge-to-edge screen and no home button — similar to Apple’s long-awaited iPhone 8.
