You Can Now Learn Digital Photography from a Real Harvard University Course Completely Free

If you’re looking to brush up your photography skills in 2017, Harvard University might have just the thing for you.

The Ivy League university has uploaded the entirety of its digital photography course to ALISON, a repository of MOOCs — or Massive Open Online Courses. Best of all, it’s completely free — all you need to do is create a user account on ALISON to start delving into the fundamentals of photography.

The Harvard photography course consists of 12 modules that run the gamut from using software tools to better understanding composition and how light affects photography. A thirteenth module sums up the rest of the courses. The 12 modules should take an average student around 10 to 15 hours to complete, according to PetaPixel. If you pass the course with a grade of 80 percent or higher, you can purchase an official diploma, certificate or PDF to print out or put on your resume.

Thus far, the course seems to be pretty well-received too. It’s a bit older — most of the curriculum was published in 2009, so most of the software skills are somewhat outdated — but it currently has a 4 out of 5 star rating, with over 2,400 votes. More than 400,000 students have taken the course since it was uploaded, according to the website.

Harvard isn’t the only university to publish a MOOC in recent years. The oldest learning institution in the U.S. is in the company of other universities such as UCLA, Yale and Princeton. Of course, quite a few MOOCs are aimed at computer science and other academic courses, so it’s nice to see Harvard publish a creatively-minded MOOC, The Next Web points out.

If you’re hungry for more learning, ALISON has hundreds of other courses covering everything from psychology to business management and entrepreneurship. If you’ve got some extra time on your hands, give their website a look over.
