Apple Pay, which provides an easy and secure way to make online payments, hit the web only a few months ago and it’s already vaulted to the uppermost ranks of popular payment methods. SimilarTech, an analytics firm which tracks data from over 30 billion websites, found that Apple Pay currently ranks as the fifth most popular payment platform on the top 10,000 and 100,000 websites it monitors.
Apple Pay currently has a 0.25% payment technology share on the web, only trailing behind the likes of PayPal, Stripe, and Braintree. It currently outranks Google Wallet, Amazon Payments, and over fifty other payment platforms.
Apple Pay is currently available on 1,035 websites, including those for Apple, Bank of America, Capital One, and Walgreens. By contrast, PayPal works with over a million different websites, whereas Stripe is on more than 38,000, and Braintree works on over 45,000. The top three countries it is most popular in are the US, UK, and Japan.
What’s amazing about this is that Apple Pay is only available on the Safari browser for macOS Sierra and iOS 10, which speaks to the immense popularity of Apple products around the world. Still, Apple Pay has a ways to go before it overtakes PayPal, which has a 2.36% share of web payment technologies– 9 times greater than Apple’s share.
