Google’s Plush Daydream View VR Headset Will Finally Hit Store Shelves Nov. 10

You’ll soon be able to get your hands on Google’s new Daydream View VR headset, the company announced. The View is the first of many Google headsets that will support its Daydream VR — technology that’s built into Android Nougat. Although, there’s currently only two phones support that will Daydream: Google’s Pixel and ZTE’s Axon 7. But other phones with Daydream compatibility will be announced in coming months, The Verge reported.

And unlike its literal cardboard predecessor, the Daydream is a plush, fabric-lined headset system. It’s been designed by Google to be comfortable, easy to setup, and convenient to use, so first-time VR users can quickly jump into the medium. The Daydream View works wirelessly, and automatically detects when you unlock a Pixel phone — which switches the device into VR mode. It’ll also ship with a simple controller, which can be used to navigate in various VR content.

Consumers can use the View for various purposes, such as streaming Hulu, YouTube and Google Play videos, using Google’s Street View in VR mode, and virtual reality video games. The Daydream View also boasts some custom-made virtual reality animations and experiences, as well as content from world-class publications such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Google wrote in a blog post.

The Daydream platform, system and hardware was first unveiled by Google at an developer’s conference in May. The Daydream View headset in particular was publicized last month, at the Pixel and Pixel XL announcement event.

The Daydream View is currently available to preorder from the Google Store, and it’ll officially hit store shelves on Nov. 10. While it’ll only be available in one color — Slate — for the time being, Google has plans to release Crimson and Snow models. It’s priced at $79 in the US, and will also be sold at Verizon and Best Buy brick-and-mortar locations. Additionally, The View will be available from various retailers in the UK, Australia, Germany and Canada.
