AT&T has big ambitions for its DirecTV Now streaming service. According to Variety, which caught a peek at customer-service documents accidentally leaked by the wireless provider, AT&T has plans to give away free Apple TVs to customers that subscribe to the paid service for at least three months, and Fire TV streaming sticks to those that pay for at least a month.
If the report is true, the promotion would prove to be an expensive endeavor for AT&T, at least at the outset. At a rate of $35 per month, a three-month subscription to DirecTV Now costs far less than the $149 fourth-gen Apple TV. The Fire TV stick retails for $40.
DirecTV Now is an internet-based over-the-top streaming service, available on smartphones, tablets, and computers, that is due to launch later this year. It provides access to most of DirecTV’s programming as well as channels such as ABC, A&E, CBS, ESPN, Fox, HBO, MTV, NBC, Nickelodeon, and Discovery.
The cord-cutting service also allows users to watch TV shows up to 72 hours after they originally air, and offers access to a video-on-demand library of 14,000 titles, according to Apple Insider.
AT&T has been making big moves in the media industry, having recently inked a blockbuster $85 billion deal to acquire Time Warner and its extensive back catalogue of video content, which includes HBO and Warner Bros. Studios.
