Samsung Recalls 2.8M Washing Machines After 9 Bodily Injuries Were Reported

Samsung, who is still in the wake of its Galaxy Note 7 recall fiasco, announced Friday that it will recall 2.8 million washing machines due to safety concerns.

The recall affects 34 different models of washing machines sold since 2011. Reportedly, the tops of the machines can detach from the main body during use, posing a safety hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. In fact, Samsung has received more than 700 reports of its washing machine tops detaching, and nine reports of injuries due to the defect — including a broken jaw and an injured shoulder, the New York Times reported.

“Our priority is to reduce any safety risks in the home and to provide our customers with easy and simple choices in response to the recall,” Samsung spokesman John Herrington said in a statement.

In response to the recall, Samsung is offering owners of the affected washers free in-home repairs that include “reinforcement” of the machine tops along with a year-long warranty extension. Additionally, the company will offer a rebate that consumers can use toward a new washer, whether manufactured by Samsung or another brand. Customers who bought an affected machine in the last 30 days are eligible for a full refund, the company wrote.

Samsung, currently the world’s smartphone market leader, is still reeling from the botched recall of its Galaxy Note 7 — a device that was prone to spontaneously catching fire. Although the Note 7 and the washing machine recall don’t seem directly related, this new incident could further damage the company’s quality control and product testing reputation, according to Business Insider.

Similar to the company’s Galaxy Note 7 recall, Samsung seems like it’s trying to keep owners aligned with the brand in spite of the difficulties. Customers who choose to use the rebate offer toward a new Samsung washer, instead of another brand, will get “an additional loyalty incentive up to $150,” the company said.
