Apple Silently Rolls out New v3.5.1 Firmware for AirPods

Apple quietly unrolled a new firmware update for AirPods on Wednesday. The update bumps the AirPods firmware from 3.3.1 to 3.5.1. AirPods update automatically when they are inserted into their charging case and linked to a Wi-Fi-connected iOS device — so if you own a pair of AirPods, in all likelihood, they’ve already been updated.

It’s unknown what the v3.5.1 update contains, as it was a silent release and there is currently a lack of patch notes for the new firmware. Early information seems to indicate that it’s mainly a miscellaneous bug fix patch, and that it doesn’t contain any major front-facing updates. As far as which bugs, the silent update might address problems with lost Bluetooth connectivity during calls and battery drain issues. Some anecdotal user reports via Reddit seem to back this up.

Along with the lack of release notes, the AirPods update process itself is a quiet one — there’s reportedly no message or alert sent when the Bluetooth headphones are updated. To check if your AirPods received the firmware update, or if you just want to know what version your headphones are running, follow these simple steps.

  1. Connect AirPods to your iPhone.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap About.
  5. Tap AirPods.

Apple released its AirPods in late 2016, just barely in time for the holiday shopping season — and quickly sold out, partly due to limited stocks. Since then, AirPods have accounted for a quarter of all wireless headphone sales. Their popularity could be a downside for consumers wanting to get their hands on a pair, however. The Bluetooth headphones are still out of stock at most retailers, and Apple’s own website estimates a 6-week shipping time for new orders.
