Samsung to Increase iPhone 8 OLED Display Production to 160 Million Units

Samsung was previously rumored to have inked a deal with Apple under the terms of which it would supply as many as 100 million OLED display panels for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8. However, an even more recent report published Monday morning by the Korea Herald is now alleging that Apple has extended its manufacturing agreement with the South Korean tech-titan, which would see that the California-based company is supplied with as many as 160 million Samsung-manufactured OLED displays through 2018.

The move is yet another telltale sign that Apple is anticipating a greater than expected demand for its top-of-the-line, 10th anniversary iPhone 8 — although only the iPhone 8, according to most rumors, will be the recipient of these advanced OLED displays; while the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will retain LCD panels similar to the current iPhone 7 flagships.

Unlike the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, which are anticipated to follow in the footsteps of previous ’s’-model upgrades, Apple’s iPhone 8 is slated to be a very special, and very expensive device, boasting a litany of advanced features — including wireless charging, a so-called ‘glass sandwich’ design built around a stainless-steel frame, with very minimal bezels, and the Touch ID sensor embedded underneath the OLED display since there reportedly won’t be a physical home button on the premium device.

Other details about the Cupertino-company’s top-tier offering for 2017 remain scarce at this point, however we’ve also heard rumors suggesting that it will feature an even more effective, IP68 water- and dust-proof certification, the possibility of iris scanning technology, as well as next-generation internals including an ‘A11’ SoC and upgraded cameras across the board.
