Pokémon Go Still Makes Millions Despite Losing 90% of Users

Remember Pokémon Go? The hype surrounding the augmented reality game that basically took over the internet last summer has obviously died down substantially. In spite of that, the viral game’s creators are still raking in quite a lot of money, according to a new report.

Data from research and analytics firm ThinkGaming shows that Pokémon Go has averaged about 148,000 daily users in the last five months, compared to the nearly 1,600,000 users tracked between July and November 2016. That’s around a 90 percent drop in the game’s user base. By that measure, it’s not a stretch to say that the hype surrounding the game has been gone for quite a while now.

Despite that massive drop in popularity, the game still makes a ton of money. In fact, the earnings haven’t dropped by that much at all. At the height of its popularity, Pokémon Go was reportedly earning about $130 every minute. Now, the game pulls in about $99.52 per minute — not a hugely significant drop, and that number is pretty disproportionate with the percentage of users lost. Additionally, according to ThinkGaming’s statistics, Pokémon Go makes more than Clash of Clans, which pulls in about $67 a minute, but less than Candy Crush Saga, which averages about $149 in the same amount of time.

It’s worth noting that those statistics aren’t pulled from the publisher, Niantic. Rather, ThinkGaming makes estimations through usage observation and careful analysis — including tracking app rankings via the App Store and Google Play. Still, its data and estimates are widely trusted by game developers and publishers. All in all, the data suggests that the remaining Pokémon Go players are extremely dedicated fans who are willing to spend money on in-app purchases and micro transactions. So while the game’s hype might be dead, its apparent ability to make money isn’t — at least not yet.
