Apple Will Soon Accept WWDC 2017 Scholarship Applications

Apple will begin accepting scholarship applications for its 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference on March 27.

Every year, the company offers scholarships to aspiring developers and students that allow them to attend the conference with most expenses covered. Primarily, the scholarship covers the ticket — which normally runs for $1,599. Starting this year, however, Apple will also provide free lodging. Flight or transportation costs aren’t normally included, but Apple says applicants with “extenuating circumstances that would require financial assistance for travel” to let them know in 500 words or less, along with a letter of references from a teacher, supervisor or similar person of authority.

Eligible applicants must be at least 13 years old, registered as an Apple developer, and enrolled either part-time or full-time in a course or study, or alternatively, be a member or alumni of a STEM organization. Applicants must provide an image or PDF of a current class schedule or membership information with a principal’s or leader’s contact information included.

Apple updates the scholarship application process from time to time, and this year is no different. To apply, applicants must create a “visually interactive scene” in a Swift playground that can be experienced in three minutes or less. Applicants can use Swift Playgrounds on iPad, or Xcode or macOS, Apple stated. Additionally, one must submit a description of the Swift playground in 500 words or less, as well as an 500-word-or-less essay about “sharing coding knowledge and enthusiasm for computer science with others.” The Swift playground itself must be the work of a sole individual — Apple states that group work will not be considered.

Apple’s 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference will take place June 5 to June 9, at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. To learn more about Apple’s WWDC scholarships, or to submit an application yourself, go to Apple’s updated scholarships website.
