AT&T Introduces Free Service to Block Robo-Calls and Other Nuisances

There are a number of measures you can take to block suspicious and unwanted calls, but AT&T is doing its utmost to make them unnecessary for its users’ convenience. Today, it unveiled a free service called ‘Call Protect’, which as its name suggests has the goal of blocking spam, robo-telemarketing calls, and other troublesome sorts before ever reaching your phone. It’s a network-based service that AT&T postpaid wireless customers with HD Voice (voice over LTE) are eligible for. This solution works with both iOS and Android smartphones.

According to the press release, AT&T Call Protect features automatic fraud blocking and suspected spam warning calls. This means that fraud and spam calls are automatically stopped at the network level before they ever reach a customer’s phone. If you’re in the HD Voice coverage area and you receive a call that AT&T suspects is spam, you will see a warning on your incoming call screen that lets you decide whether to pick up or not.

Finally, you can also download the affiliated Call Protect mobile app, which offers expanded services including temporary call blocking.

“Nuisance calls are an industry-wide problem that unfortunately affect many people,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Device and Network Services Marketing, AT&T. “We’ve listened to our customers and know they want a network that provides tools to proactively assist in blocking nuisance calls. AT&T Call Protect, along with others, will help put customers more in control of the calls they receive.”

Earlier this year, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler delivered requests to major wireless carriers for free robocall blocking services, following numerous complaints from customers.
