RollerCoaster Tycoon Comes to iPhone in New Feature-Packed Mashup Game

Atari has released a new iOS game that’s sure to bring back nostalgic memories for fans of the RollerCoaster Tycoon series. RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, released today, incorporates the two first titles of the popular theme park simulation series. It’s not a bundle of the two games; rather, it’s one new game that blends features and scenarios from RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, released in 1999 and 2002, respectively. Like the original games, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic lets you build and manage your very own theme park — from designing your own rollercoasters to managing staff and park finances.

Although it’s not the first RollerCoaster Tycoon game released for iOS and Android, it is the first mobile game in the series that doesn’t rely on heavily microtransactions, Engadget reported. When you buy the game, it already comes with most of the features and 95 scenarios from the previous RollerCoaster Tycoon titles. The few in-app purchases available include two content expansion packs, “Wacky Worlds” and “Time Twister,” for $1.99 each, which are based on two PC expansion packs released for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.

There’s also a Toolkit expansion available that offers more in-depth editing, as well as import / export features so you can take your iOS theme parks to your PC. The Toolkit costs $5.99. Altogether, that’s $16 for the entire package — which is fairly reasonable considering you won’t have to pay even a dollar more to unlock or speed up other features of the game.

“It was my long term ambition to bring the classic game to modern touchscreen devices as its visual style and tactile nature are so well suited to smartphones and tables,” Chris Sawyer, the original developer of the classic games, wrote in a news release.

The new iOS title retains the classic view and nostalgic graphics of the original games, but its gameplay and controls have been modernized by the London-based Origin8 Technologies, a mobile indie game developer responsible for titles such as Solar Siege and Future Sense, Polygon reported.

RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic is now available to download on the App Store and Google Play for $5.99, and can run on most devices running at least iOS 7 or Android 4.0.3 or later.
