HMD Global, the company that owns the rights to produce Nokia-branded devices, unveiled its first Android-powered flagship on Wednesday. And it’s here to take on giants like Apple and Samsung ahead of their own respective 2017 handset launches.
The Nokia 8 will be HMD Global’s first attempt at establishing itself as a major player in the smartphone industry, and it’s leveraging the well-known Nokia brand to do so. “We think we the Nokia brand and the combination of industry leading performance as well as immersive and innovative consumer experience, we will immediately be able to make a mark in the high end segment,” HMD Global’s Florian Seiche told CNBC.
Specification-wise, the Nokia 8 is pretty standard as far as modern Android flagships go. It’ll sport a 5.3-inch LCD display and a Snapdragon 835 CPU. But unlike the recent trend of edge-to-edge display design, the Nokia 8 will retain top and bottom bezels with the standard capacitive controls seen on many current Android models. It’ll ship running Android Nougat 7.1.1. Notably, the Nokia 8 will lack wireless charging or any waterproofing. Arguably, its feature set and design are somewhat dated compared to the likes of upcoming Apple and Samsung devices.
In order to stand out, the Nokia 8 is hinging on several new camera tricks. Most notably, a mode called “bothie” (as opposed to “selfie”). Essentially, it’s a feature that’ll allow users to take pictures or record video using the front and back camera simultaneously. The device will also come equipped with a dual-camera module capable of recording 4K video, as well as 360 degree audio recording technology.
The Nokia 8 is slated to ship in early September in Europe, though it’s not currently clear if it’s headed for U.S. shores. It’ll be priced at €599 ($705) when it launches and will be available in matte silver, polished blue, matte blue and polished copper.
