Most recent iPhone 8 leaks have corroborated the idea that Apple will do away with Touch ID on its high-end flagship. And instead, HomePod leaks have revealed that Apple will employ an advanced 3D facial recognition system on the iPhone 8 (a technology dubbed ‘Face ID’).
The latest report indicating that ‘Face ID’ is the future came over the weekend courtesy of The Korea Herald, which claimed that while the speed of Apple’s facial recognition system is so fast it can be measured in “millionths of a second,” concerns remain about the technology’s overall scope and applicability.
While ‘Face ID’ sounds conceptually promising as a Touch ID replacement, the report addresses at least one key concern: relating to the efficacy with which ‘Face ID’ will be able to authenticate and authorize Apple Pay transactions, if at all. The report notes that people tend to hold their iPhones at a variety of different angles when they’re laying flat against the NFC-reader. However it appears that Apple has addressed this concern in recent weeks, as it was recently revealed that ‘Face ID’ will work and allow for full authentication functionality even when the iPhone is laying flat on a surface.
Speed, however, is the main focus of The Korea Herald report, which cites a number of advancements in ‘Face ID’ over Touch ID, adding that “The new facial recognition scanner with 3-D sensors can deeply sense a user’s face in the millionths of a second.” The system will also use infrared technology, which will allow it to function in the dark and in low light settings, reports The Wall Street Journal.
