iPhone 8 Rumored to Start at $999 for 64 GB Model

Earlier this year, one well-connected analyst sent shockwaves through the industry by publishing her predictions that Apple will charge as much as $1,099 for a 256 GB variant of its upcoming iPhone 8. And now, well-connected insiders at the New York Times reveal that a 64 GB iPhone 8 will likely retail for somewhere around $999, “according to people briefed on the product.”

The report went on to highlight several of the iPhone 8’s most highly-anticipated features, including its all-screen design with a massive 5.8-inch OLED display, facial recognition via advanced 3D camera systems, wireless inductive charging, improved internal components, and more. However the New York Times report is merely the latest in a barrage of last-minute leaks about the iPhone 8, which is believed to be well into mass production by now ahead of its anticipated mid-September unveiling.

If the claims made in the report are accurate, then they would certainly coincide with previous reports suggesting that iPhone 8 will be available in three storage capacities, as well as the analyst predictions about Apple offering a 256 GB iPhone 8 for $1,099. If Apple does in fact release three iPhone 8 sizes, with the base-model starting out at $999 for 64 GB, then it would only make sense to expect a top-tier, 512 GB iPhone 8 model to cost as much as $1,199.

All the stigma and skepticism about “a thousand-dollar smartphone” aside, the milestone price-point is simply not as unrealistic as it once seemed. With companies like Samsung having recently introduced sub-$1,000 flagships like the Galaxy Note 8, one must consider that the cost of manufacturing high-end smartphones has likewise increased in recent years, particularly as the quality and capability of internal components has improved. Of course, the good news is that as smartphone prices go up, so too will wireless carriers’ attempts to keep you locked in.
