Leaked Logic Board Reveals New iPhone 7s Details

A new photo has surfaced online that allegedly shows off internal logic boards destined for this year’s upcoming iPhone 7s Plus.

The picture was posted to Twitter by well-known leaker Benjamin Geskin, and while the logic boards are devoid of many components, they could reveal a few details about Apple’s upcoming nominally updated iPhone 7s lineup.

First off, if genuine, the logic board appears to belong to an iPhone 7s Plus device, as the screw placements match those on the current-gen iPhone 7 Plus (which you can see here). The picture also suggests that the iPhone 7s lineup will be powered by Apple’s upcoming A11 chipset, as etchings on the logic board line up with the rear design of the chip seen in previous leaks.

In addition, it seems that at least one version of the iPhone 7s Plus will come equipped with an Intel modem, which certainly makes sense. While Apple is likely to still source modems from Qualcomm, the ongoing legal dispute between the two companies is likely pushing more orders over to Intel. The logic board is also stamped with “3217,” a timecode that suggests it was manufactured in the 32nd week of 2017, earlier this month. That lines up pretty well with current launch timeline rumors.

It’s worth noting that this is not a component for the highly anticipated iPhone 8, since that device is rumored to use a stacked logic board design. Additionally, the iPhone 8 could sport a new type of L-shaped battery, which wouldn’t be compatible with the alleged leaked picture.

Apple’s A11 chipset will reportedly be sourced from long-time supplier Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), and will be the first chip to be produced using the chipmaker’s new 10-nanometer FinFET manufacturing process. It’s likely to be a good deal more powerful than the A10 chip, as one would expect. In fact, in July, a report suggested that the A11 could be up to 72 percent faster than Apple’s current chipset.

While it’s smart to take rumors and leaks with a grain of salt, today’s leaked logic board photo reveals a design that basically matches the board installed in the iPhone 7. Last year, an alleged picture of that device’s logic board surfaced in August — and turned out be to completely accurate.

In addition to running on Apple’s A11 chip, the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus are largely expected to sport a new glass sandwich design and inductive wireless charging. Both devices are slated to debut sometime next month alongside the premium, top-tier iPhone 8, a new LTE-equipped Apple Watch, and possibly an Apple TV with 4K and HDR streaming capabilities.
