Software Update Bricked Thousands of $1,800 Samsung Smart TVs

Thousands of Samsung Smart TV owners are furious after a recent software update bricked their high-end television sets, according to a new report.

The upgrade was rolled out by Samsung about a week ago, and it has apparently rendered an unknown but potentially large number of the company’s new TV units completely unusable, according to user reports. Notably, only newer and more recent Samsung TV models seem to be affected by the device-bricking update, as owners of older sets aren’t reporting any issues.

It’s currently unknown how many specific models are being affected by the bricking update, but users have confirmed that the models below are among them.  Owners of these devices report that the TV sets will either refuse to change channels or will simply show blank displays after being turned on. These new, high-end devices can cost anywhere upwards of $1,800.

“So here we are. Another morning without my TV working AND more importantly another morning with NO update from anyone at Samsung,” one user posted on the Samsung community message boards. The customer, lukehurst1991, is just one of many Samsung TV owners who has taken to the boards to complain about the issue. Additionally, users are also calling out retailers who are allegedly refusing to take back television sets that are not even six months old.

Samsung, for its part, has reportedly told customers that it is aware of the issue and is working to alleviate the problem. However, it’s been about seven days since the problem began affecting consumers, and no fix has apparently been issued thus far. As of the writing of this article, Samsung has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Similarly, other customers are pointing out that Samsung has made no effort to contact customers about the issue beyond stating that they are working on a fix. “I honestly can’t believe the incompetence that is being shown by a company of this size. The lack of communication is astounding and if I could take my TV back it would be there in a heartbeat,” the user wrote.

Just yesterday, the Korean tech giant unveiled its Galaxy Note 8 smartphone, a device that it hopes will help restore the company’s reputation after the fiery fiasco that was the Note 7’s mass recall and eventually discontinuation.
