‘Carpool Karaoke: The Series’ Debuts on Apple Music

“Carpool Karaoke: The Series,” Apple’s second original series, has debuted and is currently available to stream for Apple Music subscribers.

The series is based on the popular Carpool Karaoke segment that first appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden. In it, Corden drives around with celebrities and musicians to talk and sing songs — often tunes that the guest wrote themselves. The Apple-produced original series differs in that Corden won’t always be the host. Instead, each episode will have a different guest and host pair.

Corden does appear in the first episode of the series, which premiered on Tuesday, Aug. 8 and featured Will Smith as the guest. During its course, the two sang several of Smith’s popular tracks like “Getting’ Jiggy Wit It” and the theme song from the “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Though not always present, Corden will serve as a producer of the show, and is also slated to appear in later episodes — including one alongside basketball player LeBron James.

As for the rest of the first season, other participants will include the Cyrus family; Shakira and Trevor Noah; Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones; Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith; John Legend, Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson. Each episode will have varying lengths depending on the guest and content.

The Cupertino-produced spin-off is part of a larger effort to revitalize the company’s Apple Music streaming service. In June, the company announced that it had hired two top Sony Television executives to help produce original content and programming for the streaming service. Apple’s first original series, a Shark Tank-like program called “Planet of the Apps,” also debuted in June. More original video content is expected to hit the service when iOS 11 rolls out in the fall.

New episodes of “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” will debut each Tuesday on Apple Music.
